Sediment
General Wine Term
This describes the particles that sometimes occur in a bottle of wine. In young wines, sediment is a result of a weak filtering process during production and is described as making the wine cloudy or hazy. In old wines, sediment is a result of the tannins and dyes separating from the liquid and is often used in the form “thrown sediment.” If you find this problem in your wine, you merely need to store it vertically so that the sediment sinks to the bottom then decant it, or transfer it to a new bottle.
