An earthy wine displays scents that are associated with the earth. It is usually a positive adjective, but can be negative if the smell is overwhelming or repulsive.
A good earthy wine will smell of clean, wet soil, mushrooms or tree bark. A bad earthy wine will smell of manure or dirty mud.
Common varietals described favorably as being earthy include Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc.
