Digestif
General Wine Term
|
|
A digestif is a strongly alcoholic drink that is enjoyed at the culmination of dinner, often with a dessert. As you may figure from the name, a digestif is believed to aid digestion.
Cognac, port, brandy, dessert wines and some fine whiskeys are common digestifs. In America, digestifs are often referred to as *After Dinner Drinks*
The opposite of a digestif is an aperitif, which is an alcoholic beverage consumed before a meal, sometimes with a small snack. Aperitifs tend to be lighter - both in color and alcohol content - than digestifs.
