Big is used to describe a bold, full-bodied wine that hits your senses strong. A big wine has a potent flavor and smell; however, they remain in balance, so that no one flavor or smell overwhelms any other. Often times a big wine will have a high alcohol content.
Both white and red wines can be considered big. There are some differences, however, between a big red and a big white. A big red wine usually will have heavy tannins, while a big white wine is often high in sugar content.
Synonyms used in place of big include assertive, rich and bold.
